Which way is Better – External Blog or Internal Blog?

Do you blog internally or externally?

Blogging Platforms

Blogging and SEO Results

Currently I am testing out both of the theory’s myself. I have two websites that utilize the content on blogs externally and another site that does not use an external blog for content for the main websites. I use the content from these two external blogs by pulling the content from those blogs into the main sites from the feeds created by the external blogs. This can also be somewhat considered a form of content cu-ration  The third one in this theory does not use any of the content on the blog to the main site and actually does not even have a link to the external blog from the main site.

So at this point these businesses are producing blog results either way. This is great because I actually have live examples to show this data being monitored in Webmaster Tools and Google Analytic. Plus the great stats monitor in the Word Press Dashboards adds to the data that can be utilized as well.

Internal Blogging on Main Websites

More and more websites now a day’s are creating blogs which are directly incorporated right into the main websites. This does bring new content to the main sites, but also eliminates good inbound links coming from an external blog. Of course if you do not know by now, you are behind. Fresh web content is one of those wonderful factors the search engines appreciate. This new content created on the main site of an external blog tells the search engines you are wanting to be indexed again. Whether you WordPress blog pings the search engines or you produce this content on a main website blog; they know you created content and want it included in the results. Assuming it is of a rel=”follow”. Otherwise it will not be indexed.

This would be one of the other contributing factors surrounding internal blogging. You can have full-control over the links being created for one thing. For example the anchor text being used; which applies to external blog post as well, but also the fact of being able to internally link to other pages on the main website that can bring that link juice as long as it is of a rel=”follow”.

As you may know by know internal linking is one of the main contributing factors for on-page SEO that can help you rank your website pages. This internal linking can pass along the link juice from one page to the other. But not just that, it also creates a positive effect for hierarchical structure. Good page navigation is one of those other important on-page SEO factors that makes it easier for your visitors to find content and navigate around the website.

You can also use this internal linking to funnel your visitors to specific pages, such as for capturing a lead or showing off that new post you just wrote. There are lots of reasons to have full-control of what you can and can not do on your main website by creating a blog directly on it. Now let us cover the external blogging concept…

External Blogging Separate From Main Websites

Okay, we have covered the topic of internal blogging on a main website; let us not cover some of the reasons for external blogging. Before I go any further, I would like to address the notorious spam that is running rampant on the Internet. From my point of view no one in the SEO industry likes spam unless you are one of those black hatters or a company trying to sell off that automated software that does it for you. My suggestion is to keep from spamming and that automated software. Trust me, this automated software and spamming does not help. As a matter of fact it does more damage than good to you business and brand. Stay away from it at all cost.

Next, external blogs can be a great resource for inbound traffic to a main website. For one thing you are creating a valuable resource as long as it is of quality to the visitors of the blog. Not only that, but you can still generate some quality links leading back to your main website with anchor text of choice; along with a rel=”follow” link as well.

At this point you are still getting the same effect as if it is an internal blog on a main website because you are still creating web content of quality, generating inbound links and still have control of the rel=”attribute” as well. But the downside is not being able to control the internal linking for the main website.

Now you can build links to the main site and pass along some of that link juice to you main website, but you lose that control of internal linking on the main website. Instead you are maintaining another website that will require the same effort as the main website requires. You will have to promote the external blog and the main website as well. Of course having the external blog is an effort to help build links and promote your main website, but your efforts have to be doubled since you are now maintaining to website platforms. As you will notice below the stats adequately show day’s of posting and day’s of not posting and what constant content can do for a blog.

Blog post monitoring from WordPress.

WordPress Blog Stats

As stated your internal architectural structure on your main website is an important factor for on-page SEO, hence the same applies to your external blog platform as well. In essence you are placing your efforts into two websites in an attempt to generate traffic to your main website. So you might ask the question of why create an external blog when you are just trying to drive visitors to you main website.

Reason being, more efforts increases more results is the theory behind it all. Some say having more than one website can over crowd the search engine results pages. I somewhat agree with this theory. Simple fact being, you are providing another source that produces results on the search engines. Although true, you are still trying to drive those visitors to your main website. But at the same time why can you just not exchange those blog post from the external blog to a blog post on an internal blog since you are trying to do the same thing. It really boils down to what factors you decide and what your blog is intended to do.

Plus, some do not always write web content on a blog which is appropriate for the current main website is one reason. Secondly, an external blog as mentioned provides another source to link from to the main website.  Another reason for having an external blog is that fact that some do not have the funds or resources to implement an internal blog on a main website or just not have placed this much thought into it all.

Although today, more and more main websites are being designed off the basic principle of having the blog created internally. This does eliminate having to maintain another external blog and in the eye’s of the search engines can help reduce spam. Main website by far have less spam problems than external blog platforms like WordPress. It is up to you and what direction you choose.

Make sure you promote your web content.

Blog Promoting

Promoting the Blogs

One factor that has not been covered yet; is the necessity to promote the blog post whether it is on an internal website blog or an external blog. This is one of those contributing factors that must be done no matter whether you utilize an internal or external blog. Your blog promotion is what is going to make your blog successful. Because without this blog promoting you may never get this great web content you write in front of those wonderful visitors you so much desire. This is one of those factors that really does not matter whether or not it is an external blog or internal blog.

“You must promote for success”.

Spamming is out of Control Because of Cheap Blogs, Link Building and Cheap SEO Company’s

Blog Creation for Link Building

In the effort to create links for back link profiles and more results, individuals and companies have resorted to tactics of duplicate profile creation, multiple fake profiles and an unsurpassed amount of blog sites with little or no use to anyone looking to gain valuable information. Some examples are WordPress sites with a single post created with the sole purpose of posting one or two links within the article. It is obvious the sole intention of the created WordPress or BloggerSpot was to post an article for the sake of link building. Most of the time this is the only article posted  on the blog and bring almost no significant value to the reader if the blog post is found. I consider this spam and a complete waste of time.

The strain on the search engines become more and more challenged because of instances such as these cheap blog post creation tactics. This is now requiring the search engines to put more time and effort into indexing these pages, along with trying to determine the value of the blog or post. These fake and fraudulent accounts are usually created by some cheap SEO company saying they can create links or a blog post with a comment on it for the purpose of link building.

What is WordPress Web Blogging?

What is WordPress?

These are staggering statistics, but the truth of it all. There are just to many WP sites of absolutely no value what so ever. I can not explain in full detail how many times I have seen WP sites with just a single post and that is all, which of course is for the sole purpose of posting an article for a link.

Everyday I continue to find way’s to generate traffic and produce more leads without these tactics. It has been evident though, that there are more and more fraudulent accounts being created by wood be users looking to game the search engines and social networks.

Do not get me wrong, I appreciate what WordPress has done for the Internet – but it would seem that the availability of free WordPress blogs has created a large part of the problem. This does not exclude BloggerSpot and any of the other available free blogs systems as well. Blogging is a great way to promote and bring valuable information to your readers, but something about it needs to be done.

Have you ever noticed that some of these blogs do not even allow you to post a comments on the post. Well, I believe once the blog is created and the post is posted; the creator of the blog and post no longer has a use for maintaining the account since they have already received payment from the customer and completed what was paid for by the customer. This basically becomes a dormant and useless blog. Although the person who paid for the links would beg to differ of course.

The Demise of Link Building

How much spam could be prevented if link building was no longer an issue? If you no longer needed links then would this reduce the need for unwanted scrupulous blogs and articles? How about directory and article submissions as well?

What do you think?

I recently was involved in a discussion on LinkedIn concerning ranking without links. This discussion has prompted some thoughts about the need to eliminate link building. Although at this point link building is still a principal concern to gain rankings in the search engine results and should not be thwarted at this time and date. It has been an interesting discussion thus far and believe eliminating link building would greatly reduce spam significantly. But as we all know, link building is still an important factor for ranking in the search engines.

Why Link Building is Still Important

One of the main reasons link building is important still, is the simple fact it is part of the search engine algorithms in determining ranking’s. The gentlemen stated that he could not figure out why one company with a limited number of links compared to another company with 300,000 links could place on top of the company with a larger back link profile. I suggested to the gentlemen that it could have been a niche or even could have been the quality of links being produced. I have personally seen websites with less links but of higher quality links produce higher search engine results than the latter.

I also suggested that the attributes of “follow” and “nofollow” are contributing factors with regards to the links and the direct correlation of these attributes. He seemed to be concerned with the fact of page rank and how page rank is determined by the number of links you have generated. I quickly explained that the number of links to determine page rank is true, but at the same time page rank is no longer a contributing factor for determining search engine rankings. The search engines can now determine a page rank for a website, but yet not use page rank in the algorithm as a ranking factor in the search engine results.

Conclusion

No matter what, do not stop creating links to your business. Even if the link is of “nofollow”. Reason being – even a link of the “nofollow” attribute can still produce traffic to your website. Although the search engines do not give points for it being a “nofollow” link and it is not followed by the spiders/crawlers – you can still generate a lead from it. Secondly, if you have a diverse back link profile you will gain significant strides in the search engine results. One last note, if you are one of those cheap SEO company’s generating blogs for the sake of posting a single article for the sake links, your day of demise will come. Sooner or later the search engines are going to find a way to completely combat the spam you produce.

Marketing Web Content and Blogging for the Web

April 23, 2012 13 comments

Phase One – Article Writing & Initial Blog Posting’s

Web Content & Article Submission

Web Content & Article Submission

Quality articles are the de’facto now a day’s. I started with five articles that were completely unique and of quality content for my readers. The purpose of my analysis was to find out the significance of article writing, article submission and the importance of writing quality content to gain stronger search engine results (SERP’s). After careful consideration of what to write  about, I decided to write on basic SEO services that touch on a variety of search engine optimization. Each article was crafted with the basic reader in mind. These article’s were not to technical, but at the same time explained simple SEO tactics, do’s and don’ts and some of the best practices.

After careful review of each article which took approximately one week to write these five articles, I began by posting the first article on two of my dominant blog’s. Although the content on each of these blog’s was the same, the point was to find out how it would be ranked in the search engine’s with regards to duplicate content as a main factor of concern and how effective this type of link building can produce during this entire process. I have of course made use of te rel=publisher attributes and utilized each blog as an asset to one another by using a link exchange tactic from one  blog to the other. This approach resembles a link wheel effect in some aspects since links pertaining to each blog were generated during this process as not to over do it  though. Of course the ideal was to keep it organic as possible without building to many inbound links to each blog to fast.

Phase Two – Article Submission

Before being able to measure the importance of  article writing and article submission services I measured the search engine results for some specific keyword terms and phrases. The keyword’s were selected and remained the same throughout the entire process of submitting to article directories. Some of these article directories allow outbound links to be established within each article, but the majority of these article directories only allow for a simple bio at the bottom of each article.

The next part of the  equation is the rel=follow or rel=nofollow attributes which are always of topic in the SEO world. Some believe that a rel=nofollow link is of no significance while others believe it really does not matter since a link is a link. Of course the search engine companies do not tell you how much weight is placed on the rel=follow or rel=nofollow links. I always take it with the approach that a link to your site is another chance someone can find you. Now, I would not place to much emphasis on generating links of rel=nofollow, but it can’t hurt your site if you do post those kind’s of links. As a matter of fact resent studies are speculating the search engine’s are measuring all types of links and even may be placing weight in the link no matter what the attribute may be.

After, the first hundred or so article directory submission‘s I began to notice a gain in my search engine results for my chosen keyword’s of choice. Of course the main goal was to generate higher search engine results for the keyword’s chosen, but at the same time I quickly realized it was not the article generating higher search engine results it was the links being built on the anchor text placed at the  bottom of each article. Okay sure this is a great way to generate more inbound links to the site, but is the content its self actually gaining the needed attention of the reader’s? After asking myself this simple question, I thought about how to measure the impact of the reader’s.

Sure, you can measure the gain’s in the search engine results and even check the metrics of your site with web analytic’s by increased visitor numbers, locations and source links of traffic, but is this really what quality article writing and article submission is about? Answer, not entirely. Although it is a great way to establish quality inbound links, there is another primary function of article writing and article submission service. What you may ask, well – “establishing yourself as an authoritative figure in your industry is one of the main reasons to write quality articles”.

By establishing yourself in your given industry you begin to gain the trust and respect you deserve by proving you know what your doing. Now this authoritative presence does not happen over night, but it will allow you to show off some of your knowledge and gain follower’s overtime. This also allows for interaction in discussion boards, forums, blog’s and social networks too. When you write a post you should immediately be thinking about where to post the great new article you just spent time writing. There is nothing wrong with wanting to show off your hard  work. Doing some simple posting and even making use of  some catchy titles, known as link baiting; are great ways to show case your work. Posting links on your social networks allow for customer interaction, while at the same time building inbound links to your new article post.

Phase Three – Blog and Article Conclusion

Tips for Writing Articles

Writing Tips

Now that you have begun to establish yourself in your given industry, gained more followers, provided quality content for your reader’s and the search engine’s, you should decide how much content you need each month and continue your quality content writing on a regular basis. It is difficult to say whether or not your article was read or not unless there is some kind of capability for your article to be commented on. Of course you always going to have those spammers who post a link on your blog or article just for the sake of posting a link. This my friend’s is one of the main reasons you should continue writing as well.

Eventually you will be able to tell who is actually following you because they are reading your content and continue to interact with you or whether they are just one time visitors posting one of those pesky spam links. Plus, you can decide who is who when they actually post something on the article that proves they read it. Usually the one or two line comments are from sources looking to gain a link and probably did not actually read your article’s. Now assuming your articles are being read and your gain faithful followers who are gaining informative information from your quality content you should start to notice a significant impact in traffic on a regular basis. As long as you continue to write quality content continuously though. Writing quality content is not a one time process and should be continued constantly in conjunction with other internet marketing and SEO tactics.

Here are some simple thing’s to consider when writing articles and blog’s for your industry.

Search Quality Control

Search Quality Control

Finally, after about a month and a half of submitting these unique articles to directories, there has been an impact in my overall search traffic and followers being gained. One part of the equation I failed to mention thus far, is that I did not do any other search engine optimization during this process except for simple guest blog posting on other sites and normal daily task of interacting on social networks. Although I almost forgot, there were at least two of the five unique articles on two different blogs posted during this process as mentioned in the first part of this article. Almost no other link building tactics or SEO was done during this entire process just to more accurately measure the effectiveness of article writing and article submission. At this point the overall outcome has been a success and recommend that you continue to submit to article directories with quality content and write blog’s at regular intervals. Secondly, one significant factor was the increase of traffic to my blog’s. I found the search engine’s will show stronger search engine results when your posting to a blog at a fairly normal rate.

To prove this a time span of approximately one month was placed on these blog’s before writing the next blog posting. I began to notice over time that the blog’s organic search engine results began to gradually decrease during this time of no activity. Once I decided I waited long enough to find out how fast the blog would organically decrease in the search engine results, I made my next post. Almost instantly after the posting these blog’s began to rank higher organically again. Now, try applying this same technique to your website. Some SEO Specialist refer to this as “Content is King“.

The search engine’s are triggered by this normal activity and will continue to keep your blog’s indexed with higher ranking’s as long as you continue to generate new content on a regular basis. Although I have not seen many of these article directories directly show up in the search engine results such as the blog’s do, these article directories still have a direct impact on your site’s search engine results. If you have opted to perform these kind’s of article submission services and have gained limited follower’s/reader’s you can rest assured that your still going to gain higher organic search engine results which can amount to more traffic and increased sales anyway.

Do not become discouraged if the amount of follower’s and reader’s is minimal, it will come in time. Patience is one thing you must maintain during the process. Eventually your hard work and effort will pay off. This portion of the process can be the most difficult for some people because establishing yourself as an authoritative figure in your given industry does not happen overnight. With all of these principles in mind and a little  patience people will begin to take notice of your efforts. If you believe you would like to start submitting your articles and have no ideal of where  to start, give Link Worx Seo a call and one of our SEO Consultants will be glad to discuss all options with you.
